Carlton - Impact Report

Carlton - Impact Report

Impact report  - written March 2021

Name of school –  Carlton Primary School

(formerly Carlton in Snaith Community Primary School)

Name of local authority  - Selby Educational Trust (SET) -  formerly NYCC

In our first round of supportive funding, March 2019, which we were extremely grateful  for, we were able to facilitate and fund music tuition for children of our school.

We used the funding to pay for a music teacher to come into school weekly to teach all children to play an instrument. It was brilliant.  I know when Allan Scarlett visited the school he was pleased to see he enjoyment and participation of the children in one of these lessons.

Children who participated thoroughly enjoyed the lessons. They were disappointed when the teacher, who was booked, was absent. They were even more disappointed when their planned concert and performance was cancelled because of Covid19.

We have shared information in newsletters and shared videos. Unfortunately, the last planned ‘concert and performance for parents and the rest of the school, scheduled for early April 2020 for the children who were having the tuition was cancelled as we moved into a period of lockdown because of Covid 19.

I enjoyed seeing the children when I visited the lessons. The class teacher reported excellent engagement from the children and a real sense of enjoyment and achievement.

A post experience survey which was planned never happened because of the school closure, and COVID related challenges.

Other information:

Over the past 4 years, we have worked extremely hard to develop, improve and enhance our curriculum to make it even more rich, varied, engaging and enjoyable for the children. Our existing vibrant culture of singing is  strength of the school and we have now expanded opportunities for children to play instruments.

Covid 19 made so many aspects of school challenging with many children missing out on singing and musical tuition. Post pandemic times - t this time we need music most! Music is good for the soul, it gives a sense of connection and community to the children. It brings happiness and enjoyment. We want these vital components for the children of Carlton Primary School.

Our aim is to develop our creative curriculum by all children having the opportunity to develop a love of and passion for music. The demographic of our school is such that our community is diverse, with a larger than average population of traveller children along with those who suffer from financial deprivation. We want to inspire, enthuse and engage children in taking up music, raise aspirations of music as a career pathway and a self-belief that music is for everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, social background or religion.

We want parents to see the joy of watching their children being able to be hands on with a number of different instruments without the worry of financial affordability and celebrate this as a whole community.

We love music in our school:

  • We sing regularly (in non Covid times)
  • We have musical special mention assemblies when anyone who sings or play an instrument gets the opportunity to perform to the rest of the school.
  • We previously have taken part in singing events (most recently ‘Selby sings’ at Selby abbey , where the children wrote and performed a song with a coach, entitled The Jessie window, co commemorate the 950 birthday of Selby Abbey.  https://www.selby.gov.uk/selby-sings
  • Our school choir can’t wait to be allowed to start singing together once we advised it  is safe to do so following Covid 19 restrictions.
  • Similarly we want to resume our 3 in school performances.
  • Selby Educational Trust is  small Multi Academy Trust – with currently only 2 primary schools. Carlton in the second school to join this group of schools, following Selby CP School. Selby CP are also passionate about music and up until recently have had additional musical tutor enriching their curriculum.
