Holme Valley Primary School Impact Report

The Jean Freedman Music Foundation funding has ensured that Holme Valley Primary School is able to enhance and enrich our children’s composition skills. All our KS1 and KS2 children now have access to their own keyboard or xylophone so that they can apply their new compositional knowledge alongside reading and playing notation. We have also seen a steep increase in the number of children showing an active interest and enjoyment of music as this has provided our children with the chance to learn a musical instrument in a whole class setting.

Our full class sets of keyboards, xylophones and handbells have been thoroughly utilised throughout our school including in our dedicated after school provision. Our after-school club provides children with the opportunity to learn to read music and eventually compose their own music using the fantastic resources that you have enabled us to purchase.

Here we have our KS2 children learning notation

Our children told us these things

“I enjoy learning how to read music and playing it on the xylophone”. Emily

“I really enjoy having my own instrument to use so that I don’t have to share”. Amelia

“I now want to learn to play the piano and I’ve asked my mum if I can have lessons at home”. Ruby

Keyboards and Xylophones

The class sets of keyboards we purchased enabled our year 3 children to compose their very own whole class composition and perform it to their parents at a parent community event. Our inclusive performance ensured that all children took part and excelled. Our parents were amazed at the children’s confidence and enthusiasm while performing.

Future Plans

We now have a dedicated music teacher who delivers the music curriculum and we are keen to fully utilise her expertise. Further funding would enable our school to build our stock of percussion instruments so that we can provide class sets of castanets, beaters and triangles. These will provide us with the chance to teach rhythm and tempo in a whole class setting which is a crucial part in the teaching of composition.
