Impact Statement

The Jean Freedman Music Foundation funding has helped us to develop and promote music within our primary school.  We installed outdoor musical equipment on our Key Stage 1 playground and is accessed on a daily basis by all the children.  We know this is the case as its directly outside the staff room and we get to listen to the music they create every lunchtime! It is a wonderful sound to hear and even better to watch as you can see the children working together to create sounds together and develop their turn-taking skills.  The instruments can also be accessed by Key Stage 2 when they go and spend time in our community garden where each year group has a raised bed designed by themselves with the support of the local community.

Comments from children and staff included –

‘like to play music on them’

‘they are fun to play’

‘I like the rainbow colours’

‘I pretend I am in a band’

‘encourage sharing and turn taking amongst the children’

‘lovely to see the children creating sounds together and singing along’

‘they enjoy making all the different sounds and provides them with another activity when outside’

We are continuing to raise the profile of music within the school since we received our funding. Both the choir and the school-signing choir have performed at local events such as the village Christmas fayre and the summer fete to wonderful audiences.   The choir have also performed at the local carol service and at the lighting of the Christmas tree in the village.   During the summer months they have the opportunity to perform at the summer fayre and last year they performed at an afternoon tea for members of the local community.

A comment from a staff member –

‘Last weekend our school choir performed at the Village Hall Christmas Fayre and the lighting of the tree ceremony on the village green. They sang beautifully and so many residents commented on their festive spirit and outstanding behaviour. Well done to everyone!’

The funding has also enabled us to take the choir to perform in Scunthorpe Music Festival for the first time.  They performed beautifully in two different classes and were also able to enjoy and appreciate the other schools which took part in the festival.  We also took our reception class to perform in the festival where they demonstrated a singing game they play in school.  Both events were enjoyed by the children, staff and parents and we would hope to continue entering the festival and look at other classes we could enter if we receive further funding.
