Developing our Curriculum

The funding from the Jean Freedman Music Foundation has allowed us at CPA to develop performing and using notation within our curriculum. Our children are thoroughly enjoying learning an instrument and developing their skills each year. We can already see how much our children are growing in confidence!

Thanks to the previous set of funding from the foundation, we have bought in 2 class sets of glockenspiels and 2 class sets of recorders for our music curriculum teaching. These instruments are accessed by the whole school, nursery to year 6, weekly. These are now a staple in our regular teaching of music.

Regular monitoring shows that pupils are making good progress in their playing abilities and are increasing in confidence when performing in whole class, small ensembles and solo work. As a school we have been developing our own playing and sight-reading abilities with regular CPD, and have been thoroughly enjoying the glockenspiels ourselves!

Pupil interviews have been conducted twice per year since the introduction of the instruments, and the children have highlighted the glockenspiels and recorders as their favourite part of their music learning! They are not only playing the instruments, but are now confident in improvising and composing using them. Having tuned percussion has allowed us to teach pitch and written notation, which is a key skill in the music curriculum.

The introduction of the instruments has raised the profile of music in school and we now have children interested and taking lessons on various other instruments, both in and out of school, as a results of this.

Teaching staff say…

‘I think the biggest impact on music is the enjoyment of being able to play an instrument together. Some children have only had experience of untuned percussion instruments up until now. The children are all having to read musical notes from a younger age and this skill will stay with them.’

‘I have enjoyed the development opportunities that the instruments have allowed me to be a part of. I feel that I am delivering a strong music curriculum to my children as they are able to compose, improvise and perform using tuned instruments.’

 Children say…

I enjoy playing the glockenspiels because it is so much fun! I get to make my own music and play for my class. I am very proud of myself! –Year 1 child

Music lessons are so much fun when we get to sing and play the glockenspiels! It is sometimes hard but I am really pleased when I learn something new! –Year 3 child

I always look forward to my music lessons because I get to play the glockenspiels. I have been playing them since year 1 and I tell how much I have improved. –Year 5 child

 Future Plans

Our goal is for every child to leave our school a proficient and confident musician. Thanks to the generosity and support of the Jean Freedman Music Foundation we are well on our way to accomplishing this! In the future we hope to continue providing our children with good quality music teaching, and broaden their musical learning and experiences.
