Quality First Teaching from a Fantastic Music Specialist

Without funding from the Jean Freedman Music Foundation the children at Elloughton Primary School would not be making the fantastic progress in Music that they have made so far.

Prior to receiving any funding, our school had very poor provision regarding music. It lacked consistency across the school, the curriculum was not progressive and music was not as high profile as it is now.

Since we have received the funding, we have been able to fund a musical expert to provide quality first teaching to pupils across Key Stage One and Year 3. This teacher (Mrs Tessier) has had a fantastic influence on Music across the school which has resulted in better progress, higher attainment, raised expectations and above all raised levels of participation and enjoyment. Mrs Tessier has really raised the bar and ensured great consistency in the teaching of Music from Y1-Y2 last year.  This year, her efforts are focussing on bridging the gap between Key Stage One and Key Stage Two working with the Y3 pupils (as well as Y1 and Y2) to secure the foundations of music and continuing to build upon these.

Never before have we seen such quality compositions from the pupils, such confidence and standard of their recording and notation is phenomenal.

Not only does Mrs Tessier teach, but she goes above and beyond enabling us, as a school, to contribute to our local and wider community. Yet again we participated in Young Voices 2023. We have also been able to form a choir who will perform at seasonal events in our local care home and at our local village light switch on. Mrs Tessier also offers small group music tuition after school as an extracurricular club. She also helps to organise and facilitates all of our performances at our local church during harvest, remembrance, Christmas, Easter and at the end of the year.

What our Children think:

‘We love music lessons. Mrs Tessier is very kind and helpful and makes learning music fun.’ - Year 2

‘We love learning music as it gives us a chance to be creative and compose our own pieces of music.’ - Year 3

‘Mrs Tessier plays the piano really well and it is really nice to listen to in assemblies.’ Year 2

‘I love learning the Ocarina afterschool with Mrs Tessier’ Year 3

‘My mum and dad loved seeing me perform at the village light switch on. We wouldn’t have done that without Mrs Tessier’ Year 3

What our Staff think:

Having Mrs Tessier teach music across KS1 and now into Y3 has ensured real progression. She has built solid and firm foundations for music and is continuing to build upon these.

Children are now more skilled when composing, knowledgeable when recording their compositions and they are confidently using a fantastic range of musical vocabulary. Curriculum Lead

Funding from the Jean Freedman Foundation has meant that we have been able to provide fantastic teaching, not only for our children but for our staff too, myself included. Mrs Tessier is a font of knowledge and permeates every aspect of Music in our school. Her contribution is phenomenal and without her, we would not have achieved the standards that we have this academic year. Music Lead

Future plans:

Mrs Tessier has a very strong vision for developing Music through enhancement of resources. Mrs Tessier will work on sourcing quality instruments as well as other additions such as headphones - to enable pupils to listen to their compositions independently. What is more, we hope to continue to maximise opportunities to perform for the community.
