About Frederick Gough School

Frederick Gough School remains at the heart of the community that it serves. As a community school, our main aim is to ensure that all of our children leave as individuals who are academically successful, happy, sociable, well rounded and ready to succeed with their next steps in life. Learning is at the centre of all that we do and we are proud of the excellent results that our children achieve.

Overview

Frederick Gough recognises that each pupil carries with him or her multifarious needs and potential in a way that cannot be summed up in a report, but rather must be done through knowing and spending time with each pupil. In the same manner the provision and care we provide for pupils cannot be summed up in a document, but must be observed and experienced through spending time with us.

Thus this document provides an overview of how we provide for the SMSC needs of our pupils and despite being extensive, it cannot provide the pervasive nature of care that we offer to each pupil and how we cater for their individual and developing needs and how we are constantly mindful of circumstance.

We are proud of the level of care that we offer for each pupil and this document shows the variety and all-permeating nature of that care.

We know that the development of each pupil in spiritual, moral, social and cultural areas allows the pupil to learn, mature and achieve but also to take part in their own lives and in society in a manner that will impact upon themselves, their families and us all.

We are continually learning and developing in our provision for the spiritual, moral, social and cultural needs of our pupils.

Spiritual

'Whoever reflects earnestly on the meaning of life is on the verge of an act of faith.' Paul Tillich. An awareness of spirituality can be found daily during assemblies and accompanying thoughts for the week. It may also be seen in a range of lessons and extra-curricular activities, through reflection and observation of the conveyance of the importance of a spiritual approach to life and to the universe around us.

Moral

Without a moral framework to guide our actions we can make no sense of the world or progress within it. We have a range of methods of moral guidance, from the continual and ad hoc interventions of tutors and all staff to special lessons, activities and trips with a moral aspect.

Social

Every day and every interaction between individuals is an opportunity to develop and understand the needs of society. The focus on this area of development can be seen in the constant nature of opportunities in this area.

Cultural

Integral to the joy and benefits of living in the 21st century is the opportunity to know ourselves and others through an awareness of the diverse nature of our own culture and the range of cultures around the world.  As in any aspect of development and education there are pupils who need additional help in specific SMSC areas. Throughout this document we have indicated how we support and guide individual pupils who have additional needs in specific areas.
